Avey Tare enlightened fans with a psychedelic spectacle of sound and color in the dim lights of Shirley’s Theater: a black-box style experimental music space in the back of Gramps Bar in Wynwood.

Decorated with Halloween wallpaper- black with white ghouls and moons-and creatures like vampires and zombies aligning the walls, the small theater contained a cozy atmosphere, surrounding the tight crowd. It’s a small space but a lot happens in there. In the middle, a stage takes the spotlight with bright lights like a Planetarium show stimulating the senses.

Avey took the stage like a fanatical beast of sound, creating a one-man show that sounded like a full band. He created an explosion of music with synthesizers, sound repeaters, and instruments like the kalimba, acoustic and electric guitar. Every song is an emotional journey filled with gentle angst or sober melancholy- all together forming a melodic synthesis of originality and soul that could only be described as mountainous, overall exuding joy and gratitude for this magical creation of life. The vibrant colors and animals displayed on the stage such as an alligator express the artist’s love of the environment.

The artist, Dave Portner aka Avey Tare, known as a member of the band Animal Collective, was performing at Shirley’s Theater on October 6, 2023 for the release of his latest project 7s (Domino) just ahead of Animal Collective’s hotly anticipated album Isn’t It Now? out later this month.

Thank you to Avey Tare and Motor Mouth Media for the invite.
